My last post was a bazillion years ago, because sometimes life says things like: “fuck you and your blogging shit, go working until your ass falls off”. So, fuck whoever complained about my lack of posts, and thanks to all my dear readers who still like me – because I love you whatever may come.

Today I have prepared something special for you: 7 hours of awesomeness recorded last weekend at a party called discolab. My friends Aka Tell and Disco Demons celebrated their birthday, and joined forces with Technick, Andy Korg an me to make this evening something special.

Danube Rave 2010

The Danube Rave is one of the longest living events in Upper Austria, and probably one of the most prestigious and ambivalent projects as well. The first party in 1993 featured three D.J.s (sic!), which you will probably still know: Westbam, Electric Indigo and Eric Fischer. The last one, Eric Fischer, is up to this day the mastermind of the Danube Rave, and soon his project picked up speed, fame and size.

Paul Van Dyk, Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier, Felix Da Housecat, John Aquaviva, Jeff Mills, DJ Hell, Boris Dlugosch and Adam Beyer, just to name a few, got invited to play at the Danube Rave during the first two years. Linz turned into a mekka for techno-enthusiasts and thereby got attention by an audience all over Austria and even from Germany and the party-hungry Czechs and Slovaks.

Where there is light, there is also shadow: The Danube Rave got criticized by other local techno-crews like Uran-C for commercializing their beloved scene. This debate of course got fought all over Europe, a fight which already started in 1991 with the rivalry between club owners and rave organizers in UK, France and Germany. Nowadays this isn’t quiet the big topic anymore, as the borders between subculture and mainstream tend to blur more and more on the one hand. And on the other, electronic music lost it’s revolutionary claim and found its place in our society, which naturally comes along with compromises and settlement. Since the mid-90s, the driving force behind the evolution of electronic music is the club-scene, whereas the soundsystems utopian dream of a revolutionary techno movement bursted a long time ago.

But lets come to the presence: I was thrilled when Eric called me and offered me the honor of booking this years electro-house floor, officially hosted by the project Discolab which I started two years ago. I’ve called some friends and I think the result is as awesome as it can get: Our floor houses some of the best Electro-House DJs Austria has to offer at the moment. And the rest of the lineup is breathtaking as well:

DiscoDemons – Mixtape With A Smile

What are the keys for success for a dj nowadays? Today it only takes you a couple of minutes to download a cracked software, hunt for free downloads in the blogosphere and bam, you are a dj. But to get recognized in the scene, to get gigs and connections is still a hard and long way to go.

When people ask me what it takes to be a dj, I tell them that the key is to engage yourself with music in every form. DJing doesn’t have to start and stop with the two hours you spend at the club behind the wheels of steel. You can make mixtapes, you can blog, you can write for a magazine, you can throw your own parties or you can look for like-minded people and start your own artist collective.

One of the djs who seem to think the same is DiscoDemons. My fellow friend started his music blog a couple of years ago, first only as a service for his friends. Soon his page picked up speed and fame and now he’s one of the uprising stars in the Austrian dj scene. Having played at the Beatpatrol and many other great venues, he is hungry for more, and rumors are that he will start his own club project soon.

He recently released a new mixtape, which I want to share with you today:

His newest mixtape is a great example for DiscoDemons dj style. He is on top of the newest tracks, also thanks to his blog, and sometimes drops in a classic to loosen up the density. On a technical level, his mixing skill has reached a new level over the past year, and it’s a pleasure to see him on the stage furiously working his tools. He knows what turn a sitting crowd into a dancing one, and he certainly knows how to turn a dancing crowd into a crazy mob of screaming people. If you want to see that in persona, I have the honor to play with him at Saturday at the STWST in Linz, Austria. See you there!

Mika vs RedOne – Kick Ass (The ‘S’ Remix)

Have you seen the movie Kick Ass? Before the movie started, I’ve been very cautious about its plot, after all it was a Hollywood production. But I liked it a lot, it was one fun and gory ride on the pop-culture train and self-reflected enough not to just go under.

It got a similiar feeling towards this remix of the Kick Ass score track from Mika. After all, the original is a housey feel-good production from the shelf, the kind you can find in every second Hollywood production. And when I clicked on play and heard the vocals from the original, it got lucky that I was too lazy to immediately click on the next track. Or should I say, I was lucky? Because apart from the original pieces, this is one of the finest electro-house productions I heard in quite some time.

As said, you should probably skip the intro and outro and use some nice effects during the breaks. But in-between, hell breaks lose. The two synth-lines give this track a truckload of stomachpunching hellyeah, the sound as a whole is fat enough to keep up with productions from Wolfgang Gartner. If used wisely, this track certainly is a crowdpleaser!

The ‘S’ is an Italian producer/dj-duo, who earned their first spurs in Bergamos club-scene, where they spread their first productions in 2009. Recently they participated in a producing workshop led by Gigi Barocco, and to me it seems like this really helped their style. If they cut back a little bit on the housy vocals, this two have the potential to seriously kick some butts. (Ha!)

Riva Starr ft. Noze – I Was Drunk (DivKid ‘Pissed Up’ Remix)

One of the key ingredients in working in the music biz is recognizing which artists come to stay and who falls in the one-hit-wonder category. Nothing against one-hit-wonders, they are an essential part of the musical evolution, as they often trigger new styles or even are the base for entirely new genres. But covering an artist long before he gets famous / recognized by the masses is essential for small event organizers and journalists, and it’s as well one of the keys for your own satisfaction (and you need that, especially when the payment sucks as it mostly does). Come on, everybody can book Moonbootica to get a full house and make some quick cash, but who cares for that?

DivKid is one of this acts who surely came to stay. They sent me a nice email asking me to spread their latest remix, and I was happily surprised to see the original he had chosen. I have played Riva Starrs track countless times, especially during the warmups, and it often was the trigger for the dancefloor to start living. And DivKids version has the potential to follow in the originals steps by bringing in some new twists:

It’s a solid Electro-House production, carefully putting together the different original pieces without overstuffing the track. Your feet will not be able to resist to seesaw to the beat, the french harmonica and Nozes beautiful vocals blend nicely together. And what I especially love about this track is the second break at 3:05 as it kicks your stomach with a massive bassline coming out of nowhere.

This track has potential to make people scream, as does this fine boyband as well! Expect more from DivKid here in the near future, as they were so nice to promise me an exclusive download – yippy yippy yeah!

Radiokillaz – We flexin

I’m following Radiokillaz since a couple of months, and their output is astonishing. Some say that this two guys are rising to be and stay at top of the British music scene – that’s the pr talking, but time will prove it anyway. For now, I know for sure that they are willing to put their whole energy into their music – they even host a weekly radio show on Point Blank 90.2FM London /103.6FM Surrey at 22:00 o’clock (GMT) (tune in online!).
That’s enough for now, I’m sure we will come back soon to talk some more about this guys. Now, listen!

Their latest free release (and they do a lot of them) is a strange dubstep track mixed with d&b elements and: Chinese fluts and vocal effects. After this first culture clash, a little dub-break kicks straight ahead in the main melody. They have used a variety of basslines, and sure put a lot of effort into the arrangement. I especially like the break starting at 1:48: It starts lightweight and then uses a stronge reverbe to suck you in. And when your brain is comfortably swimming in the bass lines, the main theme comes crashing in again.

Sick Boy – Boom!

Kiez Beats records recently released the second EP from the Amsterdamian artist Sick Boy called “BOOM!”. It is loud, ravey and rocks any dancefloor, that is at least what the label says

On the remix front Sick Boy has been working like crazy contributing to lots of acts like Dirty disco youth’s “Stupid Sound” (kinetika records), DRLCT Freddie’s “Boys and girls” (DANR Records), Homework’s “Student tits” (Blacklabel records) and Stereoheroes “Washout” (Crux records). He also just finished his work on Jamie Fanatic & Jesse Voorn’s “El musicae” which will be released on Jaimie Fanatics new label and the Waxdolls just asked him for a remix for their soon to be next single “15 minutes”!

Sick boy has shared the stage with the biggest names in the world like Justice,Steve Aoki, Mstrkrft, Princess superstar, goose, Guns n bombs and the list goes on. And to make you smile today, he gives away the original version of Boom! as a promotion for free!

This track will rock a crowd like no other, mixing old school piano breakdowns with Rave synths that will hype up a crowd and make them jump as high as possible. Included on the EP are some jawdropping remixes. Belgium ravers Shaved Monkeys are fairly new to the scene (we already covered them, of course), but listening to their remix makes you think they’ve been at it for years, loud beats and heavy basslines will defanetly get the party started. The other remixes got done by Doc Trashz, Lex Chauve & Teddy Crawfurd, Eric Sharp, Kick-Oh and Steenbergen.

Exclusive: Znippy Kid – Glitchy Dope

I’m back from my holiday, hooray! I’ve been visiting the probably best festival in Europe, the fusion to see some of the finest German artists perform, and I can tell you: Minimal is still huge there, but after a couple of hours time to adapt I got into it again. And with fifteen stages, there is always something new to discover, my personal highlights were Wevie Stonder, Bong Ra and Duran Duran Duran. Now my batteries are recharged, and we can resume our trip through the wonderful world of music.

Many artists use the word kid in their artist name, but seldom they really are underaged. However, Znippy Kid, or Philip B. choose a quite fitting name, as he is a 15 years old producer from Hanover, Germany, who started to play around with DJ Software when he was 12 years old. One year later, he began to produce dirty house, fidget and electro house tracks as his favourite genres.

His first track got released on Plasma.Digital just last week, a remix for Bymont Bros. and Feral, which you can listen to and buy on beatport. Now he sent me the track Glitchy Dope for an exclusive dancendancen.com release:

Znippy Kids first blog release is a solid electro house track. The bassline is already punchy enough to make your feet stomp, the melody is still a little ricket, but fulfills its job well enough. Especially in the breaks you can hear the talent this young guy has, he surely took his time to learn from the generation before him.

I’m amazed of this promising young fellow, and I’m sure it’s not the last time you will hear from Znippy Kid. Thumbs up!
